The minimal SIR model is a discrete stochastic model that averages to the standard SIR model. The ratio of growth to exponential growth is approximated by the logit-normal distribution. Although it makes the same assumption as the standard SIR model that the population is well-mixed it is easily extended from complete graphs to social networks.
